Renewable Energy
With an investment of nearly $11,000 million Colombian pesos, Gremca, Agricultura y Energía Sostenible S.A. (GREMCA Agriculture & Sustainable Energy S.A) opens the first power generation plant from biogas to mitigate climate change and the sustainability of the palm growing business in Cesar.
The creation of this plant, located in the municipality of El Copey, generated more than 100 jobs during its construction, and its payroll is expected to increase with its operation, maintenance and supervision.
This energy transition project is part of the strategic commitment of the Palmero Nucleus, whose objective is the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through the use and good management of waste from the palm oil extraction process.
Through this initiative, carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions are directly reduced by using biogas, a sustainable alternative to minimize the consumption of fossil fuels, such as oil or coal.
To produce energy from biogas, the plant will take advantage of the methane capture process of industrial wastewater treatment systems (POME – Palm Oil Mill Effluent) with biodigesters, mitigating nearly 30,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) to annually for the first 10 years.
With this improvement, the palm tree company contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and marks a milestone in Cesar, positioning itself as an organization conscious of environmental preservation, and the opportunities to generate jobs and create markets derived from natural resources of the agri-business industry.
